Lucinda Aku Acquaye

Dear Aku,
I'm an English major in college here in the US. I enjoy writing short stories and for the past couple of months, I've been thinking of actually writing a fictional novel. Problem is I don’t have a clue as to how to go about getting it published, etc. Any advice for a budding writer?
Thanks
Achebe in the making
PS: I love your column so much!

Dear future world renowned author,
Thank you so much for the compliment.  I am glad that you enjoy the column, and encourage you to dialogue with us more as we prepare to allow feedback venues on social networks such as facebook and twitter…stay tuned to www.obaasema.com for more info on that.

Writing this column is not always easy.  I am a full time doctoral student, and can hardly find time to advise myself!  However, when you love what you do – when you’re passionate about something, and truly believe that you are answering your calling, then throughout all of the challenges you will face to get to where you want, you will do so with a smile on your face.  My first advice therefore is, be passionate.
2. Know that Achebe and all the other wonderful writers did not do so overnight.  They probably wrote several pieces and were turned down by publishing agencies several times before someone said yes.  Do not be disheartened.   Just push through all that and work in faith that if you are meant to do this, it will happen – perhaps not in your time, but at the right time.
3.  Become an expert at your craft. I am glad to hear that you are already taking classes.  Now, build up your resume.  Volunteer for your school paper, intern at a publishing company, write blogs or articles in community newsletters and papers.  This will allow you to get practice, but will also expose you to the nuances of the field.  This way, when you are ready to submit that writing sample to a local publishing company, you can show them that you come from a plethora of different experiences and are fit for the job.  Good luck!
