Afrofunk Group Soulfège Releases Another Uplifting Album
By Linda A. Annan

soulfegeWhile Take Back the Mic, Soulfège’s latest album, echoes their usual afrofunk, reggae and Hip Hop melodic style, it evenly represents each genre. The new release, compared to their previous record, Heavy Structured Plus, better demonstrates their eclecticism while staying as musical and educational as usual.

The 11-track album features a collaborative song, “Beans n’ Rice,” with Reggie Rockstone, Godfather of hiplife – a genre that constitutes a blend of Ghana’s highlife and hip hop. The band’s use of musical instruments creates a lively experience like that felt in “Sweet Mother,” a song featured from their last album and the reggae-tune-track “Once.”

Soulfège’s interest in youth empowerment is frequently demonstrated in their socially conscious music and this album is no exception; the soft tune of “Johnny’s Song” beautifully captures the story of a teenager.

Take Back the Mic is now available on-line; a digital record can be purchased on Amazon and iTunes. Visit the band’s website www.soulfege.com for more information about the album and upcoming shows.
