Identifying the Pillar in Your Life
Is it One With Vigor?
By Linda A. Annan

Pillars often epitomize strength, stamina and support. They can be weak, depending on their foundation, or extremely strong for the same reasons. In architecture, pillars or columns, as they are also known, are purposefully used to transport the weight of the upper part of a building to its lower structure in a condensed form. Now, when you think about your life and where its strength and support stem from as in the example of a pillar, what comes to mind?

Exercising is far from the subject in question here, though it unquestionably equips us with another form of vigor. It is your mental and emotional resilience –one that can only come to fruition from something powerful.

Many of us have grown to depend on various sources of strength. One person's may be sturdy enough to withstand all things imaginable. Yet another's may sing fragility so loud that it cracks at the highest pitch. And then there are those who may not even have one and thus easily swayed by the least discomfort.

What we claim to be our pillars can often times reflect of the things we place our securities in. For instance, it can be deduced that someone who heavily relies on material possessions, personal accomplishments or career for a sense of worth will easily crumble at the loss of such blankets.

The disheartening part is that people increasingly fail to acknowledge this.

Ask yourself: “How is my life parallel with the pillar symbolism?” Picture yourself as a wall or ceiling resting on a column for support. Recall the purpose of such as mentioned earlier and realize what you would be without it –as vulnerable and weak as the tiniest ant alive; because like a building, you will be lacking stamina to stand upright.

Your source of strength cannot be mutable; it cannot be something that falters at the sight of mishaps. It must be solid, immovable. It must be able to erect you to a vertical position and assist you in remaining firm.

Can a career perform such a task? No. Neither can any man or woman because we all need the same kind of strength for support. It is apparent that personal accomplishments and such can be ephemeral; entrusting our security to them may be the most irrational thing to do.

But, how do you know what your pillar of strength is? Start by identifying your priorities in life. Unearthing them might help you determine where your security and strength lie. And then ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Is my pillar something that can ever expire? Because remember, if it can and it does, you also do.
  2. Can this pillar build me up? If so, how does it do that?
  3. Is this something I completely trust as a result of its proven dependability?

If your answers are nowhere near mirroring a positive response, then you need to reshuffle your priorities and insert pillars of excellent stamina and support in your life. If none of the ones on your list promises stability, immutability and a sturdy foundation, you need to assess yourself and find one that will deliver those –the answer is usually right underneath your nose, just sniff hard enough.
