Book of Changes:
“The Book of Open-ended Stories”
By Linda A. Annan
Rocky Dawuni's Book of Changes album justifiably represents his influences – the African culture and reggae experience. With songs densely immersed in traditional tunes and positive notes, the record truly displays the work of a star.
In pidgin he encourages Africans to unite and advance in the song, “ Africa for Learn.” While mostly linked to reggae he often switches to highlife in this album and bounces between the two genres and Afrobeat.
In “Fadaland” Rocky hits the reggae bases hard with background whistle-like sounds in conventional Island style.
The pattern of genre swaps flows throughout this 11-track album in messages Rocky describes as part of his spiritual and political evangelism where he inspires and empowers his audience. “Save Us All” is one such track in which he calls out to God to save us all from the atrocities of the world as we may be losing our sense of freedom to fear.
This record's euphonic melodies make it an easy listen and one to groove with; its contents are splashes of streaming motivational words.
